3 Essential Tips: Long-lasting Makeup

There are so many tips out there that claim to extend the wear of your makeup, and it's hard to know which to try. To make life easier for you, these are the three tips that really work.

I use these techniques on my clients and get feedback saying "my makeup lasted all day, even through sobbing during the wedding ceremony" and "I kept my eye makeup on for three days after the occasion and it looked gorgeous"!

Want to learn how to achieve these results? Keep reading!

1. Primer, Primer, Primer

This is one of the most talked-about techniques, because it always works. Primer (for your eyes and face) should be applied before any other products in that area. In general, the primers that make your makeup last are the "mattifying" ones - these help reduce the amount of oil your face produces, thereby reducing the amount your makeup products break up on your skin.

My personal favourites: Mac: Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base (₪123) Smashbox: Photo Finish Foundation Primer Light (₪175) No7: Airbrush Away Primer (₪77)

2. Using the right foundation

Whatever techniques you do - however many techniques you do - this will make the biggest difference by far. From my experience, the best way to find out how well a foundation lasts is to try it out yourself. Foundations marketed as long-lasting aren't guaranteed to be, but it's a great starting point when going shopping. There are some well known ones that I have tried personally that last incredibly well on their own, and even better combined with the other tips!

Foundations that last BEAUTIFULLY:

Estee Lauder: Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup (₪200) Smashox: Studio Skin 15-Hour Wear Foundation (₪189)

3. Setting powder AND setting spray

One of the most confusing topics in the makeup industry is setting spray. Setting spray does not replace setting powder, and for makeup that actually lasts all day, you need both. In fact, if you have to make the choice between setting powder and setting spray, I would suggest picking the powder!

Patting or buffing on powder after applying your "wet products" (i.e. foundation, concealer, cream products) locks in your makeup to a relatively immovable state. Then, once you've applied your powder, that's when setting spray comes in! It adds an extra few hours to your makeup and many facial sprays help your face look more radiant as well.

QUICK TIP: Sprays called "facial mist" may not extend the wear of your makeup. Their purpose may be to hydrate the face - watch out for that when shopping.

Setting powders I use on my clients: Normal to Dry Skin: RCMA: No Color Powder (₪42) Combination to Oily Skin: Laura Mercier: Translucent Loose Setting Powder (₪134)

The best setting sprays on the market:

Skindinavia Finishing Sprays (₪102)

These tips are in order of application for ease of use. Try them out, and let me know if it helped you!
